Intelligence without leverage leads to exhaustion
I visited my university recently and i was really bothered.
I saw some of my best lecturers.
The very Brilliant. Cerebral. Disciplined ones.
they were aging badly.
Stress was written all over their faces.
Some start lectures by 6–8am and are still teaching by 10pm.
Not in one school o but multiple universities.
Moving from one end of the state to another.
Teaching in private institutions, professional schools, anywhere they can, just to make ends meet.
And it hit me…
This is a trap waiting for many people.
Especially the intelligent and gifted ones.
Because now they have bills.
Children in higher institutions.
Family responsibilities.
Relying on their ability to trade their intelligence for pay Will no longer cut it.
So they work harder.
And harder.
And harder.
Until their bodies start to pay the price.
We all must remember that
Intelligence without leverage leads to exhaustion.
If you don’t learn how to create and use leverage, there will come a time when you’ll have to work harder just to eat the same.
Leverage is what allows you to earn more without increasing effort.
And leverage comes from learning how to use people, systems, capital, and visibility wisely.
It’s about knowing that there is so much your intelligence alone can give you.
It’s about knowing that while time is infinite, your time is limited.
And there is just how strong you can be with time.
The message here is simple…
If you start leaning how to use leverage today, tomorrow will be easier.
Here are some places to start building leverage immediately...
1. Fame.
Beyond being intelligent, you need to be known in your field.
The top 10 most visible people get paid just for association.
Advisory boards. Faculties. Corporate boards and the likes.
Not because they’re the smartest but because they’re the most known.
Fame is leverage. Visibility is currency.
So put some of your money in getting known in your space and beyond.
2. A real business.
Not a side hustle but a structured business that runs without you.
It doesn’t even have to be a legacy business.
Even a lifestyle business can become a big deal.
Even if it’s just 2–3 people on payroll, with technology and media, the business can generate income without your constant presence.
That’s leverage.
3. Real estate.
It may give cash flow or capital appreciation.
Buy land today, sell later at multiples, and redeploy the capital into income-producing assets.
That alone can hedge major life expenses.
You don’t have to wait till you can buy mansion in ikoyi or maitama before you start.
4. Private equity.
There are honest, skilled business owners around you who lack capital or structure.
You can invest money or even skills in exchange for equity or profit share.
That’s earning without trading time.
All these experiences and skills upgrade you have gained working in corporate for the past 10 years can give you some leverage you can profit from, use it.
5. Public equity.
Buy shares today that can pay you dividends tomorrow.
Own pieces of businesses that grow while you sleep.
When it comes to equity, I invest for profit, growth and dividends.
Deploy some of your money there.
6. Business financing.
Lend to cash-flowing businesses with collateral.
Even for businesses with no solid asset or collateral, I recommend cashflow, third party guarantee and character based lending.
Earn interest periodically, recover your capital at maturity.
That interest becomes predictable income.
7. Money market instruments.
Treasury bills. Fixed deposits. Low-risk vehicles.
Capital employed wisely creates steady cash flow.
Example:
₦100m placed at 15% yields ₦15m annually—without labour.
10m gives you 1.5m. That can take care of your data and phone bills for a year.
You can use the money to support your family back home.
These are some leverage tools I believe young professionals should start considering early.
You won’t stop working.
But you’ll stop suffering.
Instead of running from one contract or company to another, you choose what to work on and where to work in.
You work with clarity, dignity, and peace.
That’s what leverage gives you.
My hope is that someone reads this, reflects early, and starts building wisely—before exhaustion forces the lesson.
